FQ Community Cup A Success

The final week of the school winter holidays saw Mackay play host to the inaugural FQ Community Cup, where players from U12 to U16 from grassroots community clubs from around the state were given an opportunity to represent their zone and experience playing against players from other regions in the week long tournament. Football Brisbane fielded 11 teams from both North and South of the zone as well as combined North/South sides, with our teams enjoying some success.

Congratulations go to our U14 Boys North and U13 Girls (pictured above) who ran out as FQ Community Cup Champions in their respective age groups.. U13 Girls Coach Stacey Beddow was delighted with her team's efforts and the experience overall saying, "What a full on week of football which was greatly organized at well run facilities." "The U13 Girls team were put together from the North & South. We formed the squad and had approximately 8 training sessions before the tournament. I’m very proud of the girls as they worked so hard and were determined to win. Their hard work paid off, coming away with 3 wins and 2 draws that put them into the final where they won 2-1 against Mackay who didn’t go down without a fight. I am so pleased to have been the coach of this squad." Football Brisbane Regional Director of Coaching, Martin Docherty, who was tasked with the job of coordinating the Brisbane teams and coaches for the tournament, was also appreciative of the initiative of the FQ Community Cup, "Success can be measured in many ways, such as grand final wins or how competitive our teams were in the tournament, but I’ve measured Football Brisbane’s success on the smiles of the players faces over 7 days straight, doing something they love - playing football." He added, "Football Brisbane had 11 teams competing in the FQ Community Cup And despite some minor teething problems, we can definitely consider it a very successful event." "I want to personally thank all the managers, players, coaches, parents and siblings of the players for their support throughout the tournament. I also want to highlight the amazing job our General Manager Craig Morris and Competitions Manager Karyn Longbottom did throughout the week." "I am looking forward to doing this all again next year" he concluded. Football Brisbane General Manager, Craig Morris, reiterated Martin's sentiments, "The FQ Community Cup provided a fantastic opportunity for grassroots players, coaches and referees to come together for a week of football." "The matches were highly competitive and played with great spirit which is a credit to our young players." He added, "Our thanks go out to Mackay Regional Football Zone President Scott Mealey and his team for the countless hours that went in to organising such a memorable week." As well as our two champion teams from the week, Football Brisbane teams also performed well across the board. U12 Boys North - finished top of their pool. U13 Girls - finished top of their group and won grand final. U14 Boys North - finished 2nd in 9 team group and won grand final. U14 Boys South - finished 4th in 9 team group. U15 Boys South - finished 4th in group. U15 Girls - finished 2nd in group and and were runners-up in grand final.
