Pig 'N' Whistle Canale Cup Reaches Quarter Final Stage
The World Cup may be over but we still have the Pig ’N’ Whistle Canale Cup with the quarter finals just around the corner. Eight sides progressed from Round 4 last week with all eight home sides recording victories to head into the Quarter Final draw which is set to take place this week. Here’s the results from RD4: Grange Thistle (FCBPL) 2-1 Acacia Ridge (FCBPL) AC Carina (VCL2) 2-0 Kangaroo Pt Rovers (VCL2) Virginia Utd (FCBPL) 3-2 St George Willawong (VCL1) New Farm Utd (VCL1) 2 (AET) 2 The Lakes (VCL3) (New Farm won 4-2 on penalties) Bayside Utd (FCBPL) 7-3 Centenary Stormers (FCBPL) Moggill (VCL1) 5-0 Ipswich City (VCL1) UQFC (FCBPL) 2-1 Samford Rangers (VCL2) Brisbane Athletic (VCL3) 2-1 Caboolture (VCL1) Perhaps the biggest ‘cupset’ from the round saw Brisbane Athletic defeat Viva Capital League 1 promotion favourites Caboolture and become the first side from Capital League 3 to ever make the quarter finals of the competition, and were it not for a penalty shootout loss to New Farm Utd, The Lakes might have joined them. Athletic have recently recruited André Bonotto from NPL side Brisbane City and with a player of his pedigree, you wouldn’t be out of place for thinking Athletic could cause a further upset yet. Only four Flight Centre Brisbane Premier League sides remain in the competition and depending on how the Quarter Final draw pans out, we could possibly see a lower division side reach the final for the first time since 2015 when Capital League 1 side Pine Rivers met Lions FC in the final. Lions eventually running out winners in a 5-2 success. The Quarter Final draw will take place Thursday 19th July at 12.30pm and will be live streamed via the Football Brisbane facebook page.
