Elaine Watson Cup Quarter Final Preview

There's cup action for the women this weekend with the quarter finals of the Elaine Watson Cup. One side has already progressed to the semi-finals with perhaps little surprise being Annerley into the last four after an 8-0 demolition of Hart Sport Women's Capital League side North Brisbane. So who will join Annerley in the semi-finals? Elaine Watson Cup Quarter Finals: Fri 6 Jul, 7.30pm KO: Virginia Utd (MFBWPL) v Park Ridge (MFBWPL) @ Albert Bishop Park. An all Mt Franklin Brisbane Women's Premier League tie and perhaps the hardest of the quarter finals to predict.

The two league meetings between these teams has resulted in just one goal, with United 1-0 winners at Albert Bishop Park back in March. So on paper, this could well prove to be another tight encounter and one that may need extra time and penalties to decide.

Prediction: Virginia to just edge this one with another single goal deciding it in extra time. Wed 11 Jul, 7.30pm KO: Pine Rivers Athletic (HSWCL) v Peninsula Power (MFBWPL) @ Wendy Allison Park. Almost a local derby but one that sees a winless Athletic side from the Hart Sport Women's Capital League up against a Peninsula Power outfit that can put goals past their opponents with ease.

Power really should turn on the style in this one although coach Kelvin Wheeler may well rest some of his bigger names for this tie. That said, at this stage of the competition, Power will be cautious of letting slip what looks like an easy encounter for them.

Prediction: Brit Whitfield to have a field day as Power comfortably see off Pine Rivers with an 8-0 success. Tue 17 Jul, 7.30pm KO: Buderim Wanderers (MPW) v Pine Hills (MFBWPL) @ TBA. Buderim Wanderers, from the McDonald's Women's Premier League on the Sunshine Coast, narrowly defeated Hart Sport Women's Capital League side Grange Thistle last time out.

A visit from higher division opposition in the shape of Pine Hills could well prove a harder proposition for them. Pine Hills are currently just above the relegation zone of the Mt Franklin Brisbane Women's Premier League but are also just five points off of the top four. A gutsy 4-4 draw last time out in the league away to Peninsula Power when 3-0 down, shows they have resilience and despite the trip up the Bruce Highway, they ought to prove too good for Wanderers.

Prediction: Hills to edge a close encounter with a 3-1 success.
