Pinkenba based club Brisbane Athletic will be making a return to Football Brisbane competitions in 2018 after a six year hiatus. After spending the last six seasons playing Church League (QCSA), club President Carlos Ferreira explains their decision to re-affiliate with Football Brisbane. He said, “We have decided to return to the Football Brisbane competitions after six years because of the new structure which has been implemented going onwards from the 2018 season, which makes it viable for our club to join for the upcoming seasons. Also we feel that at an administration level, Football Brisbane has become truly professional and works towards the prosperity of all its clubs.” Athletic are no strangers to Football Brisbane competitions and have a proud history dating back to 1982 when they were formed. The club went by many different names previously - Sporting United, Latrobe Athletic, Wilston Athletic and subsequently Brisbane Athletic by which they’ve been known since 2007. President, Carlos Ferreira explains, “We moved from Wilston to our current club at Pinkenba back in 2007 after Brisbane City Council asked the club to relocate due to the proposed Ballymore Stadium redevelopment - which never happened.” He adds, “We have always played high level football, making cup finals, winning Metro competitions and being very competitive at the former ‘Premier’ divisions level. Our more recent successes have come from six straight QCSA (Church League) Division 1 Premierships.” The club boasts approximately 170 members and will be competing in Capital League 3, along with City League and junior competitions in 2018. “The club’s immediate 12 month focus will be to have our Capital League 3 side vying for promotion. In the long term however, we want to promote our young players to the highest level possible, not only in Brisbane, not only in Australia, but in competitions around the world - and of course we always dream of making the Round of 32 of the FFA Cup.” Ferreira said. He added, “Whilst the club is small compared to other clubs in Brisbane, we have always been very successful with our on field performances and helping players reach their potential whether it is here or abroad, with some of our former junior players competing in top European divisions.” Asked what the club will bring to the fore in 2018, Ferreira says, “Being a new team we will without doubt bring excitement to the competition whenever we play by playing a unique competitive style which features high quality players mixed with high quality coaching.” “Our facilities will be one of the best in the Capital League 3 competition and we will be improving them further during the season. We also extend our welcome to our Capital League 3 opponents next season to join us in the clubhouse for dinner and man of the match presentations after each game.” Ferreira concludes, “We can't wait for the season to begin.”
