FT: 3-3 Played at John Fredericks Park
Caboolture took out the Capital League 3 Grand Final by scoring the last goal of seven in easily the best game of the weekend when they beat AC Carina 4-3 at John Fredericks Park on Saturday evening. Daniel Abbey put the underdogs in front with a sensational strike from thirty yards which sailed over Jared Brownie in goal for the Snakes. Ten minutes later, Mitch Sheumack equalised with another special goal, somehow back heeling and swivelling the ball into the corner of the net. Just before the half time interval, Steven Cleary volleyed home a cross from the right and it seemed as if Caboolture were about to get away with the contest. In the 64th minute, Cleary was on target again with a hammer blow in off the crossbar and the game looked to be all over for all intents and purposes but there was a sting in the tail yet to come. With seven minutes remaining, an excellent corner was flicked into the net by Michael Thompson and a short moment later, a poor clearance from Brownlie saw the ball coming back towards him rapidly as Carina broke down the right with Dempsey who played a perfect pass across to Abbey who fired in from just inside the box to level the contest and spark pandemonium all around the ground. Into extra time, and Caboolture were awarded a penalty which was brilliantly saved by Noah Mortensen, but the final moment of the season fell to the Snakes when Lewis Bargh broke into space on the far post and crashed the winning goal into the roof of the net. It was a stunning game, one of the best you will ever see, played in front of a huge crowd who cheered and jeered and had a riotous afternoon out by the bay. Make no mistake, Capital League football in Brisbane is alive and well.
Coach Remarks:
Nathan Walker (Caboolture): “Another tight game against Carina, it’s been tough all year but we finally got one on them. At 3-1 up we were comfortable and a couple of errors let them back in it which wasn’t good because they are a team who get right behind each other when they get a goal. The boys battled hard and the young blokes have got us over the line with their legs. It’s good." Liam Saif (AC Carina): “What a game… over 120 minutes, trying not to be biased, I think we were the better side overall which just shows our boys have given 110% and left everything on the field. It just wasn’t our day. I can’t ask for any more from our boys. Well done to Caboolture, they deserved to win. if I had those players and that money I’d be expecting to win as well. They had that bit of nouse, we’re a brand new side and we were a bit rusty so we’ll come back next year and hopefully kick on and go one better next year by getting promoted.”
FB Media Player Of The Match: Noah Mortensen (AC Carina).
This really could have, and maybe should have, gone to every single player on the field because every single one of them was fantastic. But despite being on the losing side, McKee JUST edges it because without at least two brilliant saves the game would have been all over well before full-time. And lets not forget he saved a penalty in extra time. Team line-ups
