Capital Leagues Weekly Preview
It’s now down to the Preliminary Finals!!!.
My predictions for last week weren’t too bad, getting six winners out of eight (only one score correct though).
CAPITAL LEAGUE 1
North Pine v Brisbane Knights
North Pine went down by a single goal at Taringa (an own goal). It could have been more, but Taringa missed a penalty to seal the match. The awarding of that penalty saw Rhyan Scriggins dismissed for arguing the case, so they will be without his services this weekend.
Knights well and truly beat Wolves, getting up 6-2. The Knights beat the Gorillas in both matches during the season, 4-3 at Rocklea and 3-1 at Dakabin, so it seems to indicate that plenty of goals will be on the agenda this weekend. I sense an upset on the cards here.
Knights to win 4-2.
CAPITAL LEAGUE 2
Virginia Utd v Annerley
Virginia went down by the odd goal in three at Centenary. As I said last week, Ipswich City needed to stop Annerley’s James Gorrie – they didn’t. The Stars’ leading scorer was on target again, getting all their goals in the 3-1 win over the Bulls.
Virginia got up both times in the fixtures, but the finals are a different story. The Reds had the best defensive record in this division, conceding less than a goal a game and they will need that to continue to win this one and I think they will.
Virginia, 3-1.
CAPITAL LEAGUE 3
St George Willawong v AC Carina
The Saints were well beaten, 5-1, by Caboolture in a repeat of last year’s Capital 4 scenario. Carina got up in extra time over Westside, getting the winner with four minutes left after Westside had their noses in front early in the second half.
St George won both match-ups between these two during the season but by slim margins. The Saints won’t want a repeat of last year’s results when they slid out of the finals’ series with two straight defeats. They should regroup and beat Carina.
2-1 to St George after extra time.
CAPITAL LEAGUE 4
North Brisbane v Kangaroo Point Rovers
North Brisbane were given a touch up by a rampant Samford team, going down 7-0 which was a huge surprise considering they had only given up 12 goals all year. KPR had a close 2-1 win over Bethania Rams to continue their winning run and progress to the Preliminary Final.
Rovers won both encounters during the season by identical 2-0 score lines. Can the Aces rebound from that demoralising defeat? I think not.
KPR should get up in a low scoring match. 2-0 would seem to be the popular score.
