It’s catch up time again over the next week with two matches this midweek, ten on the weekend and another two next week on Wednesday night. Results over last weekend have confirmed some things and set up interesting scenarios in others. Capital League 1 - Taringa Rovers are Premiers. Still a scrap going on for the last two finals positions but three into two won’t go. Capital League 2 – Centenary Stormers have one hand on the trophy. The top four looks settled. Capital League 3 – St George Willawong have one and a half hands on the trophy. Still a scrap going on for the last two finals positions but the current occupants should hold on. Capital League 4 - Still too many hands grappling for the trophy. But top four is settled.

MIDWEEK THIS WEEK Capital League 3 - Wednesday 2 Aug - Clairvaux v Redcliffe PCYC Clairvaux lost to Westside but were in it until late. Redcliffe could only draw with Tarragindi Tigers and that put an end to their finals’ aspirations. Both teams are now seeing the season out. Bit of a hike in midweek for PCYC but I think they will be happy with a draw and a safe trip home. Capital League 2 - Thursday 3 Aug - Western Spirit v Centenary Stormers Western Spirit were losers at Toowong. Centenary had a comfortable win over Pine Rivers. Coupled with Virginia’s loss, it means they should take the title. However, Spirit will be out to spoil the party as they still have an outside chance of post-season activity. The last meeting ended 5-1 to the Stormers and I think that with too much to play for, Centenary will do the job again.

THIS WEEKEND CAPITAL LEAGUE 1

The Gap v Taringa Rovers The Gap sprung a little surprise, winning at Acacia Ridge with the only goal coming late in the game. Taringa Rovers got home at North Star to claim the Premiership with three games left. Congratulations to them. Will there be a post-victory lull? I imagine they will want to finish off the season as they have done all along and remain at the appropriate level of commitment. In spite of that, the Gators may snatch a draw. Southside Eagles v UQ FC Southside Eagles lost by the odd goal in five to Brisbane Knights. UQ added to Moggill’s misery with a five goal drumming. Realistically, neither can make the finals but they both will want to finish as high on the table as possible. Eagles won 3-2 way back in the first fixture of the season. Have a feeling they will win again. Bayside Utd v Brisbane Knights Bayside beat Mt Gravatt. Brisbane Knights got up 3-2 over Southside Eagles and crept back into the top four at Acacia Ridge’s expense. Bayside’s chances of semi-final football are also unrealistic now but Knights need to win this to put some distance between them and 5th place. Bayside might just make Knights’ place a little shaky.

CAPITAL LEAGUE 2

Pine Hills v Annerley Pine Hills easily accounted for Park Ridge. Annerley disposed of Oxley Utd on Friday night to take a firm grip on fourth position. Pine Hills have won two in a row and are now safely out of the bottom two. A win to Annerley will pretty much assure them of a place in the end of season action and that is what will happen.

CAPITAL LEAGUE 3 Tarragindi Tigers v Caboolture Tarragindi drew with Redcliffe. Caboolture had a big win (9-0) over Jimboomba and have almost guaranteed themselves 2nd spot on the ladder. The Tigers will cast their mind back to 1 July when they came away from Grants Rd with a shock victory, as will Caboolture, who will be out for revenge. The Snakes will be up for it and will get the points. Narangba Utd v Newmarket Narangba put up a spirited effort at Bardon but went down. Newmarket surprised by beating AC Carina with the only goal of the game. The win keeps them in with a slim finals’ chance. But they must win this one or that is it. Narangba still have a chance of moving up the ladder but need a win to creep closer to those above them. A draw. Redcliffe PCYC v Westside Redcliffe will be backing up from midweek action. Westside had a hard fought win at Clairvaux to stay ahead of the chasers for fourth and now maybe have their sights set a little higher. A win here will take them to 3rd with AC Carina not playing. With that as an incentive, the Grovely boys should take the points.

CAPITAL LEAGUE 4

Match of the Weekend - Bethania Rams v Samford Rangers 4th v 2nd in the race for the title. Bethania went down 2-1 to fellow aspirants North Brisbane in a tight affair which saw both teams lose a player to a Red Card. The Rams have slipped to three points behind the Aces at the top of the table. Samford travelled out to Springfield and did the business in a 4-1 win. This kept them two points behind North Brisbane. Needless to say a must win for both teams. Samford have a game in hand (against Logan Metro on 26 August), which could decide the destination of the Premiership. Rangers won’t want to drop any points here and I expect them not to. The Lakes v Springfield Utd The Lakes travelled to Compton Park and took a shock 3rd minute lead against Logan Metro. That was the end of the fairytale as Metro piled on 15 in response (the Lakers did get another three though!). Springfield were in it until just after the hour against Samford but let in three after that. Springfield should get all three points up North. Logan Village v North Brisbane Logan Village couldn’t back up their win from last week, going down to KPR. North Brisbane got home over Bethania to stay top. The Aces have a simple task, win all three remaining games (includes match v Samford next week) and they are Premiers. They will complete the first part of that task against the Falcons.

MIDWEEK NEXT WEEK Capital 1 – Wednesday 9 Aug - Mt Gravatt v The Gap Mt Gravatt were beaten by Bayside Utd. The Gap are backing up midweek from Saturday. The Hawks are slipping away from the teams in front and are 2nd last on the table. The Gap would need a miracle to make the top four and that is unlikely. Gators to win. Capital 2 – Wednesday 9 Aug - Toowong v Pine Hills Toowong kept their second half of the season form going with a good win over Western Spirit to move to 5th on the ladder, a position that would have been a pipe dream earlier in the season. Unfortunately for them, they will run out of games before the finals arrive. If Annerley win their game against Hills, Toowong will have to settle for 5th at best but they will be keen to do that and that will be enough of a prize to get them home.
