The Weekly Wash-Up

We’re virtually at season’s end and still plenty to play for amongst the competitions as we head into a catch-up weekend this weekend followed by the final two rounds of the regular season.

But we picked out five things that caught our attention from the last week including midweek action. #1:: Giant Killers Strike Again

It’s hard to avoid mentioning as Brisbane Knights did it again… Claiming their third Flight Centre Premier League scalp of 2017 with their RD5 Pig ’N’ Whistle Canale Cup success over Souths United last week, to add to their Westfield FFA Cup wins over Lions FC and Mithelton. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that all three victories were away from home. No doubt they’ll be chomping at the bit for RD6 with another away day to the winner of the Toowong v Holland Park Hawks RD5 tie being played on Tuesday night. As well as Knights continuing with the giant killing exploits, Southside Eagles joined them from Capital League 1 following their come from behind win over Flight Centre Premier League side Logan Lightning in extra time. Their foray into the quarter finals will be far tougher however with a trip away to high flying Peninsula Power next week.

You can view the highlights from Souths Utd v Brisbane Knights below.

#2:: First Premiers of 2017

We have our first Premiers of the season after Capital League 1’s Taringa Rovers secured the title following their 2-1 away win at North Star on Friday night. Victory meant second place North Pine could no longer catch the league leaders. Congratulations to Rovers who will surely be a force to be reckoned with in the top flight in 2018.

#3:: Metro Register Biggest Win

One of the more amazing scorelines of the season occurred on Saturday night from Compton Park in Capital League 4 with Logan Metro FC recording their biggest ever win since joining the Football Brisbane zone with a 15-4 success over The Lakes. Metro’s John Wani having a field say netting a double hat trick on the night to take his season tally to 12 goals. Perhaps what’s more surprising is that Lakes actually took the lead in the game when Player/Coach David Wood scored in the 3rd minute. The goal difference didn’t do Lakes any favours on the ladder either with them plunging to the bottom of the table.

#4:: Bulldogs Get Wooden Spoon

Capalaba Bulldogs will finish bottom of the Flight Centre Premier League in 2017, following their latest defeat to league leaders Rochedale Rovers at the weekend and Grange Thistle winning away at Holland Park Hawks. An unassailable 11pt gap means with three games remaining, the Bulldogs can no longer haul themselves off the bottom. The John Fredericks Park side have recorded just two wins this season with their last success coming back in May at home to Ipswich Knights when they won 5-2, but since then they have been defeated in their last eight outings.

#5:: Who’s Set For 100% Records In 2017

With Mitchelton on target to go through the whole season with a 100% winning record in the Mt Franklin Women’s Premier League, we thought we’d take a look through all the competitions to see who else is set to achieve the rare feat. Amazingly, the Mt Franklin Women’s Premier League Reserves also boasts one side looking to follow in Mitchelton’s foot steps with Capalaba Bulldogs leading the way with 14 wins from 14. They’ve conceded just 7 times for an impressive 0.5 goals per game that they’ve allowed in as they march on towards that particular premiership. We have another women’s competition feature next with the Women’s City League 5 Silver and Bethania Rams topping the table by some margin, and on target to win every game. Their defensive record matches that of Capalaba’s in the Mt Franklin Women’s Premier League Reserves with only 7 goals conceded in 14 games. Three junior clubs are also looking to achieve the elusive 100% record with Logan Lightning in the McDonalds U16 Div 4 (14 wins from 14 games); The Gap in the McDonalds U15 Div 5 Silver (14 wins from 14 games) and finally Brighton Bulldogs in the McDonalds U12 Div 6 North (15 wins from 15 games).

We’ll keep an eye on all six sides and see if they can achieve the 100% in their respective competitions.
