It’s catch up time again. While we only have a small number of games to preview on the coming weekend, there are a couple of important ones to look forward to. I’ll give you a round up of where the leagues stand. CAPITAL LEAGUE 1

SUMMARY Barring a catastrophic implosion, Taringa Rovers are Premiers-elect (or as some say “it’s theirs to lose!”). They have an eight point lead with a game in hand over nearest rivals North Pine and need only eight points from their last six matches to secure the title. The top four is still uncertain with Brisbane Knights and Acacia Ridge currently filling the remaining two positions with Ridge having a five point buffer to fifth. However, there are still catch up games to be played that will have an effect, starting with the match below.

Match of the Weekend – Acacia Ridge v Wolves FC The reverse of last weekend’s match. Ridge got off to a flying start going three up after 17 minutes. Wolves pegged one back eleven minutes later and scored two more to go into the break level. The winner came on 74 minutes to keep Wolves on Ridge’s coat tails. It’s over to Ron Proud Field this weekend for Act 2 and Ridge will be wanting to overturn that result and put more distance between the them and the chasers. Wolves will be buoyed by that comeback win and know another one puts them just two points off fourth. I think Ridge will be that annoyed with themselves after giving up a three goal lead that they will reverse the result and almost lock down fourth position.

CAPITAL LEAGUE 2

SUMMARY

Centenary’s loss last weekend to Brisbane Phoenix has allowed Virginia Utd to leap frog them on the table after Virginia’s 5-0 thrashing of Phoenix on Wednesday night. Virginia have played an extra match though. Stormers’ loss has also given Ipswich City a whisper of a chance in the premiership race. These three will make the finals with fourth spot up for grabs and five clubs in the hunt (including Toowong with a surprise outside chance). No catch up matches this weekend.

CAPITAL LEAGUE 3 SUMMARY St George Willawong now have a five point lead over Caboolture after the Snakes shock loss to Tarragindi on the weekend. This has left the door open for AC Carina to begin eying off second spot as they are now just two points back. It could all come down to the final fixture weekend when Carina travel to Caboolture. The top three are settled, so it is a battle for fourth with four clubs in the frame. Westside v AC Carina Westside could only manage a draw with a revitalised Newmarket, which didn’t help them in their quest for a finals’ spot as a win would have put them into fourth position. They are unbeaten in five matches (that includes two draws). Carina had a great win over an in form Bardon team which moved them closer to second on the ladder. Carina are on a five match winning streak and I expect them to make it six of the best. Clairvaux v St George Willawong This is another reverse fixture from last weekend. The Saints got up 6-0 at Willawong and now travel across to Mt Gravatt looking to complete the double. Clairvaux are out of finals’ contention, so now will be playing for pride especially after that big loss to the Saints. However, St George will win again, but maybe by not as big a margin. Narangba Utd v Slacks Creek Somebody did a quick look around up at Narangba and found their shooting boots hidden away in a back cupboard. After logging only nine goals in their first 14 games, they smacked six past Redcliffe PCYC. The Tigers were part of a 4-4 draw down at Jimboomba, but will be disappointed as they let a three goal lead after half an hour slip away. I’ll back Narangba to extend their winning run to two. Bardon Latrobe v Tarragindi Tigers Before last weekend, I would have picked this as a home banker. But the Tigers’ win at Caboolture has probably given them renewed hope of finishing the season strongly. Although I think they are too far back to contend for the semis. Bardon lost at Carina but that was not a totally unexpected result. Can the Tigers repeat that form? Bardon have too much to play for and should get up.

CAPITAL LEAGUE 4 SUMMARY

All teams have played ten matches to date barring Logan Metro who have had twelve. It is now really a race between the top three (North Brisbane, Samford Rangers & Bethania Rams). Fourth spot is between the next three (Logan Metro, Kangaroo Point Rovers and Springfield Utd). The Lakes v Samford Rangers. The Lakes were given a touch up by North Brisbane, conceding ten goals. Samford were the opposite, putting seven past Mooroondu. It’s probably going to be a long night again for the Lakers as Rangers will look to reclaim first position on the table and also boost their goal difference. Mooroondu v Kangaroo Point Rovers Mooroondu were given a beating by Samford Rangers conceding six by half-time. They regrouped in the second half, letting only one further goal in. KPR had an R & R weekend with the Bye. Rovers should not have any trouble getting the points here although a Friday night match out at Thorneside is no picnic.
