Narangba United 6 (Holland 24', 35', 56', 74'; Newald 70'; OG (Dowsett) 81') Redcliffe PCYC 1 (McNeil 80') HT 2-0 Played at Narangba Sporting Complex
William Holland's four goal haul helped Narangba United to an impressive 6-1 success over Redcliffe PCYC on a bitterly cold Saturday evening as United continue to improve late in the season following a dismal first half to their campaign. The opening goal came midway through the first half after an untidy opening period from both sides. Holland turning on the edge of the box and hitting a speculative effort that bounced just in front of Redcliffe keeper James Williams as he allowed the ball to slip underneath him and squeeze inside the near post. The second came following a corner with around ten minutes of the half remaining. Redcliffe failing to deal with it as Holland, unmarked at the back of the six yard box met the ball with a low shot across Williams into the bottom corner to put the Eagles up two goals to the good. Despite a brighter return in the second half from the visitors which saw Jermaine Croner go agonisingly close after his effort from the edge of the box took a deflection and drifted narrowly wide of stranded Eagles keeper Keith Schodel's far upright, the visitors fell further behind when Toto Hompa's initial shot could only be parried by Williams and Holland followed up for the tap in from the rebound. The Dolphins wasted a golden opportunity soon after to reduce the deficit when Lee Waller blasted over from eight yards out after receiving a neat cross from Croner, and perhaps summing up the visitor's evening in that one moment. Cody Newald further extended the hosts lead with 20 minutes left on the clock. Redcliffe failing to clear from a free kick with the ball falling kindly to Newald who slotted the ball past Williams for his side's fourth. Holland capped off his night a short time later with his best goal on the night. A solo effort saw him weave his way to the edge of the box and drive the ball across Williams goal and into the bottom right corner. A strong shout from Redcliffe for a spot kick fell on deaf ears after Narangba's Daniel Skinner appeared to bring down substitute Shanil Darshan after he'd crossed the ball, but Referee David Porter was unmoved despite it looking a certain foul. The visitors did eventually grab a consolation with just over 10 minutes remaining. A corner floated in to the near post had Schodel grasping at thin air as Brent McNeil met the ball with a powerful header into the back of the net. The hosts hit back virtually immediately after the restart when PCYC's Nick Dowsett turned the ball into his own net to round out the scoring and make it six of the best for the Eagles. Despite the win, Narangba remain in the bottom two, 8 points adrift of Clairvaux although the Eagles have a game in hand. If they can repeat this performance for their remaining games, they may yet survive the drop. Defeat makes Redcliffe's finals hopes that much harder but with the teams immediately above them also failing to win, they still remain in the hunt. Another performance such as this though, will surely put paid to that ambition.
Coaches Remarks:
Allan Takken - Narangba United: "Finally some goals have been going in, we've converted early chances which we haven't done all season. There's always been a belief in the squad that we can play good football. Results have improved. It's been a long season for the lads and we've got to find that belief we can go on with it." Jamie Kirwan - Redcliffe PCYC: "Narangba played to their best. They're a very good squad and a lot better than they're position on the table suggests."
