Mt Franklin Women's Premier League Preview - RD13
A strange season in general, compounded by all the catch-up games, will take shape and reveal it’s contents over the next six rounds.
Apart from Mitchelton, and probably Capalaba, the make-up of the post-season is still no easier to define.
On with the show...
Virginia United vs Capalaba Friday 8:30pm at Albert Bishop Park Virginia United was the next club on the list for the regular thrashing from Mitchelton which was no surprise really. Unfortunately, they come up against Capalaba this weekend so things might be easier but it doesn’t look particularly promising either. With no catch-up games in hand and sitting second last, everything is a bonus from now on. Capalaba might have dropped to third place but that’s all academic with points guaranteed from their two catch-up games. Last weekend’s mauling of The Gap was actually one of their best performances of 2017. They can catch Mitchelton but it’s still more likely they’ll have a real crack at finals time. If Virginia’s season isn’t already over, it will be after this game. Hard to see anyone stopping the Bulldogs at the moment. Prediction: Capalaba 3-0 Eastern Suburbs vs Pine Hills Friday 8:30pm at Heath Park Eastern Suburbs need to string together a decent run of wins if they are to keep in touch with the top four but consistency has plagued them all season. Last week they gave Souths a touch-up but coming into that game off a big loss doesn’t really give away too many clues. A win here could change everything for the better. Pine Hills remain in a precarious position following their 1-0 loss to Annerley and need to beat the teams chasing them before they can start to worry about climbing further up the ladder. Defence has gotten them where they are but a lack of goals over the last month or so has caused them problems. This game could go either way but the Pythons backline will make the difference. If they score they’ll win. Prediction: Pine Hills 1-0 Annerley vs Mitchelton Saturday 3pm at Elder Oval Annerley may ultimately look back to games which they let get away but at the moment they are second and travelling along nicely. Anything from this game is a bonus and could be the deciding factor at season’s end. It’s an uphill battle, of course, but they must fancy themselves to get something at home. Mitchelton are far and away the most dominant side in any Football Brisbane league and looking unassailable. Ridiculous goal tallies are the order of the day but luck, good or bad, has always a part of the beautiful game so something must go against them eventually. Or maybe not...they’ll need to concede three goals, at least, to lose a match. Annerley will give Mitchelton a run but there really isn’t any point in tipping anything but an away win, probably by four goals or more. Prediction: Mitchelton 4-1 Souths United vs Peninsula Power Saturday 5pm at Wakerley Park Souths United have improved since the start of the season which is all that can really be asked of them considering their struggles. This weekend they have a great chance to hit the target a few times with their opposition having a tendency to concede a few goals themselves. Of course, they already have a win under their belt. Peninsula Power have underperformed but only need to tighten up at the back for their run home to be successful. Whether they can do that remains to be seen but they they are definitely in the race, and look most likely to challenge Pine Hills further down the track. If they lose here they can forget all about it. Souths aren’t likely to win but they will surely appreciate a little more space when attacking. Power will still get past them, though. Prediction: Peninsula 5-2 The Gap vs Logan Lightning Saturday 6pm at Walton Bridge Reserve The Gap had their game against Mitchelton rained off a fortnight ago which was probably for the best considering their 5-0 loss last week to Capalaba. Still in which a chance but struggling to score goals, they need to improve and a win this weekend would set them off on the right foot. Logan Lightning are the current underachievers with a quick glance at their last five fixtures showing they are in some good form without luck on their side. This game is the most important of the lot because they need to dispose of the Gators challenge before they further advance their own cause. Game of the round as the finals face begins to tighten. Could go either way but Logan are due for a break after last week’s 0-0 draw. Prediction: Logan 2-1
