The Weekly Wash-Up
The weather played it’s part in the weekend’s preceedings as well as the recent Pig ’N’ Whistle Canale Cup games were all washed out.
There was still plenty of games played at the weekend around town so here’s the five things we’ve picked up on from the recent action.
#1:: As mentioned, the weather caused a number of games from the weekend to get postponed but with further catch-up weekends scheduled, there should be the avoidance of too many midweek encounters. Of course the biggest disruption came in the Pig ’N’ Whistle Canale Cup where the five remaining RD3 ties were all postponed last week. Three of these have been rescheduled to be played Tuesday night, one the following Tuesday and one last one to yet be rescheduled. You can check out the rescheduled fixtures HERE. It is proposed that the draws for both RD4 of the Pig ’N’ Whistle Canale Cup and RD3 of the Elaine Watson Cup will be made later this week.
#2:: Undoubtedly the result that caught most people’s attention came on Friday night in the Flight Centre Premier League when Mitchelton were defeated by strugglers Ipswich Knights 2-1. Emannuel ‘Ezy’ Peter grabbing the winner late after Ben Njie had been sent off for the home side. That result meant a reshuffle of league placings was inevitable over the weekend and it was Rochedale Rovers and Souths United who capitalised the most with both sides winning on the road against fellow title contenders. Rovers defeating Lions 3-2 in an entertaining contest whilst surprise package Souths win 2-0 at Holland Park to move up to 3rd on the ladder with Rovers back up to 2nd. But what did catch our attention is that of the top five, Souths (3rd), Mitchelton (4th) and Lions (5th) all have a game in hand over Easts and Rochedale above them. Those games are against sides they ought to pick up the points from and should all three win their catch-up games, we’ll have four sides on equal points and Lions just one point behind. We could also see Souths moving to the top with a superior goal difference. Here’s the highlights from Rochedale’s 3-2 win at Lions on Saturday evening:
#3:: Last season in Capital League 4, St George Willawong and Caboolture battled it out for the title in their first season in Football Brisbane competitions. This year both seem to be having a severe case of deja vu with both sides looking set to take it down to the final day to decide the title. Caboolture notched up yet another hefty home win over Clairvaux at the weekend whilst St George replied on Sunday night with a solid win over Redcliffe PCYC. The table sees them level on points, on wins, draws and losses and just one goal separating them on goal difference.
Neither side can afford any kind of slip up and will be up to the teams immediately below them to put a dent in either side's title aspirations.
#4:: Capital League 1 was disrupted by the wet conditions at the weekend with both Taringa Rovers and Acacia Ridge from the top four succumbing to postponements.
But it was Brisbane Knights who caught our attention, moving into 4th spot on the ladder courtesy of a 4-3 win over North Star, for their third straight victory which included recent successes over 2nd placed North Pine and 3rd placed Acacia Ridge. Not only that but they took a point from Taringa to start their recent four match unbeaten run as they certainly seem to be in the inform side at present. #5:: We finish up with the Mt Franklin Women’s Premier League where league leaders Mitchelton were forced to take the weekend off due their game at The Gap postponed. A couple of results though captured our eye including Virginia United holding top four side Pine Hills to a goaless draw on Friday night which moved them up a place from the lower end of the table.
Viriginia United v Pine Hills highlights:
Annerley enjoyed a second half resurgence against Eastern Suburbs on a sunny Saturday afternoon when they netted four times in ten minutes in a 5-1 success that moved them into 2nd on the table. They have now played two games more than Capalaba below them who sit level on points and who ought to leap frog Annerley once those catch-up games are played. Here’s the match report from Annerley’s triumph over Easts HERE.
