The Weekly Wash-Up
It was a perfect Autumn weekend for games at the weekend as we got to see some great action around town.
So here’s the five things that captured our attention from the weekend… #1: We have to get things rolling with the Flight Centre Premier League where Grange Thistle’s run of form continued with an impressive 3-2 win over Peninsula Power on Saturday night and with Capalaba’s loss at Eastern Suburbs, the Lanham Park side have moved off the bottom of the table on goal difference above the Bulldogs.
Perhaps more importantly, it’s given them a psychological advantage over Power leading into their blockbuster RD7 Westfield FFA Cup clash this coming Saturday when the two meet again at Lanham Park for spot in the Round of 32. The game will be live streamed on the Football Brisbane facebook page.
With just one defeat from their previous five outings in league and cup, you wouldn’t put it past them reaching the national stage of the Westfield FFA Cup. #2: Capital League 3 league leaders St George Willawong came up against what’s proving to be their bogey team in Westside Grovely on Sunday evening.
Ashley Bulgarelli’s late leveller for the visitors earning Westside a point in a 3-3 draw as they thwarted the Saints for the second time this season, having inflicted defeat on them earlier in the season.
With Caboolture narrowly defeating an improved Narangaba United 2-1 and having a game in hand at home to Slacks Creek this coming weekend, we’re likely to see both St George and Caboolture level on points at the top. #3: Capital League 2 league leaders Centenary Stormers avenged their only loss of the season when Virginia United were the visitors to Atthows Park on Saturday night.
United thumped Stormers 5-1 in RD3 but there was to be no repeat of that scoreline with Stormers running out 3-0 winners despite being without two of their leading goal scorers in Shoheel Khan and Steven Chester.
It’s an ominous sign for the rest of the league as they open up an 8 point gap at the top of the table. Virginia can and will most likely close that gap to 5 points when they travel to bottom side Park Ridge on Saturday for a RD7 catch-up game.

#4: Capital League 4 seems to have taken shape nicely now with three sides vying for the title as we reach the midway point; with Samford Rangers getting pegged back by North Brisbane and Bethania Rams.
The result of the round coming from Kangaroo Point Rovers who earned a valuable point away to Samford, allowing both North Brisbane and Bethania to close the gap. North Brisbane though were held to a 2-2 draw by Logan Metro but they do hold a game in hand against lowly Logan Village which ought to secure them three points.
Logan Village did however secure their first win of the season in a bottom of the table clash away to Mooroondu. A brace from Chris Hitchins handing the Falcons a 2-1 victory which should boost their confidence. #5: Our final observation from the weekend has to be the improvement of Wolves FC in Capital League 1.
After a dismal first half of the season, they have won their last three games on the trot and were narrowly defeated in the Pig ’N’ Whistle Canale Cup during last week by Flight Centre Premier League side Capalaba in extra time. Most notably though is their rise to sixth on the ladder and just 2 points off fourth spot.
They also have a couple of games in hand over their higher placed opponents but a big test will come this weekend when they face league leaders Taringa Rovers in a RD7 catch-up game at Carmichael Park. A win from that encounter would propel them into the top four and out the league on notice come finals time.
