BLOB''s Enjoy Six Of The Best Show
Bardon Latrobe 6 (Mavrik 44', 52' pen, 69', 80'; Allen 50'; Meanger 86') Newmarket 0 HT 1-0 Played at Bowman Park
Once a year the Bardon Latrobe Old Boys (BLOBs) pictured above, catch up at Bowman Park and this year they were treated to a resounding victory as Latrobe ran out comfortable 6-0 winners over Newmarket on Saturday afternoon. It could have been a different story had the visitors taken a couple of early chances in the opening quarter hour. Todd Gordon guilty of dwelling on the ball and allowing his eventual shot to be block and soon after, Oscar Cooney lobbed his effort just over after Latrobe keeper Andrew McDonald had raced out to clear a cross. The pitch did not contribute to good flowing football with the ball constantly in the air and bobbling around but the home side capitalised on it just before the break. One of those bounces saw Alex Roddy unable to properly clear, instead ploughing the ball into Shannon Mavrik who reacted fastest to get a boot to the rebound and lob Newmarket keeper Cameron Johnston. The second half saw Latrobe grab the game by the scruff of the neck and a again the bounce came in to play for their second. Newmarket's Mitchell Siebenhausen pulled down Yannish Meanger just outside the box. Jerome Allen took the resulting free kick and opted for a shot on goa, his low drive bouncing in the dirt in front of Johnstone who saw the ball go between his legs as he looked to gather it with the ball bobbing into the back of the net. Newmarket were their own worst enemy two minutes later when Latrobe's Norden Sherpa made a run into the box and was brought down by Ardesheer Almassi. Mavrik stepping up to score from the spot for his second of the game. With just over 20 minutes remaining, the game was put beyond the reach of the visitors when Mavrik was put through one on one with Johnstone and making no mistake as he slipped the ball beyond the Newmarket stopper for his hat trick. Mavrik struck again with 10 minutes remaining, reacting quickest after a good run from Sherpa that saw him brought down in the box, but Latrobe striker was on hand to tuck away the loose ball for his fourth of the game and his side's fifth. The best however was left until just before the end and it was that man Mavrik involved again, this time as provider when he laid a ball out to Meanger just inside the 18 yard box who lashed the ball beyond Johnstone for the goal of the game. The win lifts Bardon into third spot on the Capital League 3 ladder and they will undoubtedly pick up more points at home with the 'Bardon Bobble' causing the majority of visitors to Bowman Park no end of trouble. Bardon can enjoy the weekend off next weekend for the catch-up round whilst Newmarket make the trip to bottom side Jimboomba in a game they ought to come away with the points from.
FB Media Player of the Match: Shannon Mavrik (Bardon Latrobe)A four goal haul and an assist is hard to ignore and he was a thorn in Newmarket's side for the majority of the game.
Coaches Remarks:
Mark Strickland - Bardon Latrobe: "I thought it was a scrappy game. First half they intimidated us a little with their size, but half time talk was don't try and compete with them size wise, get the ball back on the floor and play our style of football." Ashleigh Hempstead - Newmarket: "Too many injuries are killing us at the moment. We can't put a consistent team together and it's been our story all year. We get a good result one week, then we lose 4 or 5 good players and this is what happens. The pitch didn't help. Conceding the second goal with a bounce like that, but they stuck to their guns and play their home ground well. We just don't have the depth to deal with the injuries we're getting."
