Mt Franklin Premier League Preview - RD10

Souths United finally did it, taking three points away at Virginia United with probably the most eye-catching result from all the Brisbane fixtures last weekend. It’s great for the league and great for their confidence. A the other end of the table, the Mustangs roadshow rolls on. On with the show... Eastern Suburbs vs Virginia United Friday 8:30pm at Heath Park Eastern Suburbs completed an excellent 4-2 win over Peninsula Power which was much needed if they are to get up towards the finals places. With two games in hand the situation is not dire having played Capalaba and Mitchelton already but they need to get a wriggle on if they aren’t to leave it too late. Virginia United promised so much early in the season but are already facing relegation with all their games played and only a three point gap from last. The loss last weekend to Souths who have been in dire straits for a long time suggests things are getting worse at Albert Bishop Park. It remains to be seen just how the loss to Souths affects Virginia but either way Easts will be short-priced favourites. Prediction: Easts 4-1 Capalaba vs Logan Lightning Friday 8:30pm at John Fredericks Park Capalaba will still be hoping for a miracle but draws against Hills and Power look to have already scuppered plans to catch Mitchelton. Still they are in a strong second place and should collect another three points this weekend. A chilly, foggy, late Friday home game will be to their advantage. Logan Lightning are part of a big queue trying to stay out of harm’s way in the bottom half of the table. Last weekend they snapped their three match losing streak with a draw against Pine Hills but this looms a bigger ask. Logan will pull off upsets along the way but it probably won’t be against the Bulldogs. Something of a danger game for Capalaba but if they get into the lead they are unlikely to be pegged back. Prediction: Capalaba 2-0 Pine Hills vs The Gap Saturday 7pm at James Drysdale Reserve Pine Hills have everything to play for in this game and will seriously dent their opposition’s hopes with a home win. Inconsistency has troubled them considering their talented squad which surely puts some doubt into their minds. Nonetheless, they’ll be favourites to beat their Western rivals at James Drysdale Reserve. The Gap are a team on the rise with back to back wins over good opposition leading into this match. A victory in this game could totally change their season and push them into the finals. Adding Pine Hills to their scalps would really make the others sit up and take notice. They can do it, but it will be tight. Game of the round and difficult to call either way. Hills have the home advantage but the Gators are winning well. Prediction: 2-2 draw. Souths United vs Annerley Sunday 1pm at Wakerley Park Souths United surprised everyone, probably even themselves, with a resounding 4-2 win over Virginia last weekend. If that doesn’t inspire confidence, nothing will. It’s a step up in class against Annerley however and keeping a nice tight scoreline is just as important as winning the game. Annerley remain in fourth place but recent results haven’t been too promising. The chasing pack are sure to start overtaking them if they don’t bounce straight back from the loss to The Gap and this match takes on a different complexion following Souths win. Not an easy three points but they still should get over the line. Souths will be riding high and could easily get back to back results. Anything but a win for Annerley would be a nightmare. Prediction: 2-2 draw. Peninsula Power vs Mitchelton Sunday 3:15pm at AJ “Jock” Kelly Field Peninsula Power have some real striking talent in their side but it doesn’t matter how many goals you score if the other team scores more which has been their issue through the defeats to Hills and Easts. In short, they really need to tighten their defence against the Mustangs or it could be scary. Mitchelton are miles ahead of everyone else but going an entire season without dropping a point is an extremely rare achievement. So it’s unlikely they will lose this game but might they only come away from Kippa-Ring. One thing is for sure, this game is certain to have masses of goals scored. If ever there was a game set up for an outrageous scoreline it’s this one. Mustangs will win on the strength of their defending. Prediction: Mitchelton 6-3.
