The Weekly Wash-Up
With still some games to be caught up, we did actually reach the midway point for all but Capital League 4. For the Flight Centre Premier League, it’s the most wide open competition we’ve seen for years with anyone of nice sides in the hunt for the premiership and finals. But what caught our attention from the weekend just gone??? Here’s the five things that made the headlines. #1: We have to start with the first win of the season for Souths United’s Mt Franklin Women’s Premier League side. A trip to Virginia United Friday night saw Paul Lonton’s struggling outfit notch a 4-2 success which brings them back into touch with the three sides directly above them on the table and in the process almost doubling their goals tally for the season. First half goals from Harriet Withers with a brace and Isabella Krecek saw Souths leading 3-0 at the break and even a late comeback from Virginia couldn’t prevent the three points heading to the way of the Wakerley Park outfit. #2: It must have been the weekend for it as another bottom placed side notched up their first success of the 2017 campaign with Grange Thistle rounding off a memorable week with a last gasp 3-1 win over Logan FC. An 89th minute Chris Roulston strike and an added time sealer from Caleb Mayberry providing Thistle with their first league win from eleven attempts since being promoted from Capital League 1 last season. It was however, their second straight win over Flight Centre Premier League opposition in the space of a week, following their midweek Westfield FFA Cup win over Rochedale Rovers. Have they turned the corner? With just one defeat from their last four games, it’s quite possible. They still remain at the foot of the table but have a game in hand over Capalaba and Ipswich Knights above them which if they win, could see them move of the bottom. #3: It’s certainly a trend from the weekend with bottom sides winning as another side that had been rooted to the bottom of their table for the majority of the season, enjoyed success at the weekend. Narangba United seem to have made the improve as they won again on the road after making the long trip south to Jimboomba United and coming away with a 2-0 win. This saw them leapfrog Jimboomba on the table with a marginally better goal difference. It does still look like a tough task for both these sides to avoid relegation, especially for Jimboomba who have played two games more than Narangba and Tarragindi Tigers above them. #4: Overall it was a good weekend for the bottom sides throughout all the divisions. Park Ridge finally earned their first points of the season following a 2-2 draw with fellow strugglers Pine Rivers on Saturday night, although they do remain winless along with just two other teams from all the divisions - Capital League 1’s Moggill who are now the only side yet to register any points this season, and Capital League 4’s Logan Village who were on the end of a heavy 11-3 defeat at Samford Rangers. Perhaps one positive for Village though is they’re only the second side to put three goals past Rangers this season in the league. The other being Springfield United. #5: Finally we can’t go past the final ten minutes from Sunday afternoon’s Southside Eagles v Bayside United clash in Capital League 1. Eagles entered into the final ten minutes with a 2-0 lead, but an unbelievable six minute spell saw the game turn on it’s head after Bayside substitute Griffin Mansfield-Taylor scored one of the quickest hat tricks ever for a substitute along with a Patrick Theodore strike saw United take the game out 4-2 and leave Eagles completely shattered. The win moved Bayside into fourth spot on a congested ladder with just three points separating them from eleventh placed Eagles who still have every opportunity of making the top four come August depsite sitting in a relegation position.
