Handy Three Points As New Farm Beat Oxley
New Farm United 3 (Innes 30’, Nunn 48’, J.Stamatis 69’)
Oxley United 2 (Thompson 12', Jordan 39’)
HT 1-2
Played at New Farm Park
New Farm United emerged from their vital game against Oxley United with three points after coming back from a halftime deficit and winning 3-2 at New Farm Park on Saturday afternoon. Oxley United were first on target when Phil Thomson got on the end of an excellent low cross and side-footed home from close range New Farm got back into the game on the half hour mark when Sam Innes fired a shot home through traffic but Will Jordan took Oxley into the break ahead with the best goal of the game, seemingly from nothing, beating his marker and drilling the ball high into the net. It was probably a deserved lead, playing down the hill, but three minutes after the break Liam Nunn controlled the ball wide on the left and brought the game level before Jimmy Stamatis scored a 69th winner with a speedy run and excellent finish through a near impossible gap at the near post. There was still plenty of drama on the horizon, most notably when Kristian Samuels was brought down inside the box in the 84th minute but Peter Stamatis in goal for the home side gloved away Jordan’s penalty. It’s tough to play on the tiny surface, particularly for visitors with space at a premium and New Farm effectively playing a 3-5-2 formation ensuring even more that every match is a tight battle, and this was no different. Genuine opportunities were hard to come by as defense dominated although both sides tried their hardest to get some passing links going. Oxley United have been resurgent over recent weeks but this result will almost certainly condemn them to a spot outside of the semi-finals with other teams having games in hand which will count against them. But it keeps New Farm in with a shot of silverware if they can play as well as they did in the second half today and their destiny is almost in their own hands with two matches against Brisbane Phoenix yet to play.
