The Weekly Wash-Up

The predicted rain on Friday fortunately didn't impact the action at the weekend too much and just as well, as we had some cracking matches and some big results. So here’s the five things that captured our attention from the weekend… #1. Capital League 4 was thrown wide open with both Samford Rangers and Springfield United on the end of defeats. Samford’s undefeated record ended with a 2-0 loss away to North Brisbane which was also the first time Rangers have failed to score since 15th August 2015. But undoubtedly the result of the weekend went to Mooroondu who caused a major upset when they came away from Woodcrest College with a 3-1 win over Springfield United. Alex Anderson with a first half hat trick to give the Roos their first win of the season whilst Springfield dropped to 5th on the ladder as the competition hots up. You can read the match report from the game HERE.

#2. It’s always exciting to see teams score in the first minute of a game but at the weekend the FB Media TV cameras captured two of the fastest goals to be scored this season in the Flight Centre Premier League. Mitchelton’s Gary Stopforth will probably hold the record in 2017 for the fastest goal of the season when he netted with 11 seconds on the clock on Friday night’s soggy encounter at home to Grange Thistle. The following night was the turn of Youiel Shol as Eastern Suburbs burst from the traps against Logan Lightning with Shol’s strike hitting the back of the net with 17 seconds elapsed. Easts then went on to smack six past Logan in the opening 45 minutes. You can watch both goals in the match highlights below… Mitchelton v Grange Thistle

#3. Whilst we’re on the topic of goals, North Pine achieved something of a rarity with six different hat tricks scored across their Capital League 1 firsts and reserves at the weekend when they hosted Moggill. The reserves hat trick scorers were Glenn Richards, Craig Parker and Joe McKeering, whilst the top side’s hat trick heros were Alistair Russell, Rhyan Scriggins and Shuto Kuboyama. We’re not sure when something like this last happened at premier competition level but it’s quite an achievement all the same. Sadly for Moggill it was an 11th straight defeat for the season in Capital League 1.

#4. All eyes were on the top of the table clash in Capital League 3 at the weekend where Caboolture were looking to avenge their opening day 8-1 defeat to St George Willawong. A win for St George would have meant a sizable gap at the top of the table but Caboolture used their impressive home ground advantage to good effect with a convincing 4-1 success which closed the gap at the top. But what we did notice was their scoring form at Grants Road in the three home games they’ve played since getting back on the park there last month - 17 goals in those three games will see the rest of the division not really relishing the trip north as the season goes on.

#5. Finally we head to the Mt Franklin Women’s Premier League where the only teams undefeated in all senior premier competitions now reside. Mitchelton made it 8 from 8 with a 3-1 away win at Logan Lightning as they maintain their 100% record whilst Capalaba also remain undefeated in 2017 following their 5-0 success at home to Souths United. Next week though, something will have to give as the pair face off against each other at Teralba Park on Saturday evening. If the Bulldogs fail to get a result there, Mitchelton will pretty much have both hands on the premiership trophy.
