There may not have been the usual volume of games on at the weekend but there was still plenty to pick out from the action we saw. Here’s our five moments from the weekend just gone… #1. Cup matches at Underwood Park are certainly proving to be very popular and the lastest round of Westfield FFA Cup was no exception. A large crowd was present on Saturday night as the Flight Centre Premier League leaders Rochedale Rovers took on PlayStation4 NPL heavyweights Brisbane Strikers for a place in RD6.
Rovers came out triumphant in a 3-1 win that was live streamed to the world, with the Strikers eliminated from the preliminary stages of the competition for the first time in the Westfield FFA Cup’s short history. #2. Just one catch-up game in the Mt Franklin Women’s Premier League at the weekend but it was a result that had us sit up and take notice with Eastern Suburbs recording their first win of the season in what surely would have been a surprise 2-0 defeat of Annerley. Although Annerley Coach Anthony Costa believed the Tigers were worthy winners on the night, that defeat leaves them 8 points adrift of league leaders Mitchelton with just Capalaba in second spot on the ladder looking like the only side that can challenge for the premiership at this early stage. #3. Mistakenly last week, we reported that Virginia United had had their undefeated record ended. However, we ended up being a week ahead of ourselves it seems as a RD6 catch-up at home to Oxley United on Saturday evening yielded a shock 1-0 defeat to indeed end that unbeaten record in Captial League 2. To make matters worse, Virginia’s Zaur Ismailov picked up two yellow cards in the space of a minute towards the end of the game to see his side reduced to 10 men. #4. We saw a 100% record end at the weekend with perhaps another surprise result. This time in Captial League 4 where Bethania Rams made the long trip to Samford Parklands on Saturday night for a RD2 catch-up game against Samford Rangers. Both sides were involved in midweek Pig ’n’ Whistle Canale Cup action and perhaps weary legs were the reason their league clash ended in a goaless draw. Suffice to say, it will be a valuable point earned for the Rams whilst the door is opened for Springfield United to take top spot should they take all the points in the game in hand they now have. Perhaps to add some interest to Capital League 4 this coming weekend, the top two meet each other at Samford Parklands this Sunday coming. #5. Finally we return to the Westfield FFA Cup to round out this week’s Wash-Up and head back to Friday night’s RD5 tie between Playstation4 NPL side Brisbane City and Flight Centre Premier League’s Logan FC. On a day when City announced their plans to bid for a Hyundai A-League license in next season’s expanded competition as FC Brisbane City Gladiators; Logan decided to gatecrash the party by promptly dumping them out of this season national cup competition with a gutsy come from behind 3-2 win which was made even more impressive by the fact they did it with ten men for more than an hour after striker Michael Adarkwah was sent off. The Brown brothers doing the damage for Logan with Max Brown grabbing the winner on 79 minutes.
