Capital Leagues Weekly Preview

Well it is catch-up weekend and despite the weekend being dominated by cup action, there are handful of Capital Leagues games on to speculate over. CAPITAL LEAGUE 1 Mt Gravatt v Southside Eagles Another battle of the birds. Following three excellent wins in a row, the Hawks came back to earth with a loss to ladder leaders Taringa. Eagles drew 2-2 with Wolves. Can Mt Gravatt rebound? Can SSE continue the good form of the last two matches and will they have one eye on Tuesday's Westfield FFA Cup clash? All will be revealed at Dittmer Park this Friday night. Last time the Hawks played an Eagles team (Bayside) they lost. My tip – the (Southside) Eagles (and they won’t be happy with that given my record with them). Wolves FC v The Gap Wolves are still not firing, drawing with Southside Eagles. The Gap went down to an added time goal against Brisbane Knights when it looked like they had secured a draw with a late goal of their own. Makes this a tricky one to consider in terms of the result. Wolves got up 6-2 in the first round but don’t expect that much of a difference between the teams this time around. Time for Wolves to fire up. UQ FC v Moggill UQ’s five losses have all been by a single goal (the latest, 0-1 to Acacia Ridge) so they have shown that they are competitive. Moggill’s performances appeared to have improved over recent weeks, but they were given a lesson by Bayside last weekend. Can the Students hand out another lesson or will they be given one of their own? UQ to come out on top here in my view.

CAPITAL LEAGUE 2 Match of the Weekend - Annerley v Western Spirit Both lost in top of the table clashes last weekend. Annerley lost by the odd goal in seven to Centenary Stormers who were without leading scorer Shoheel Khan. They were up 2-1 at the break before falling behind just after the hour mark. They got the equaliser only to concede in added time (an own goal). Spirit were down by two with just over 20 minutes left and made unbeaten Virginia sweat towards the end with a late goal but went down 2-1. Both will want to bounce back but I feel Annerley will be the victors. New Farm Utd v Pine Hills New Farm comfortably disposed of Pine Rivers to continue their good recent form (apart from the loss to Ipswich City!). The Pythons lost again (to Oxley) to remain in the bottom two but still within touching distance of Pine Rivers Utd. At the “Park”, I can’t really see Pine Hills getting anything out of this one. Virginia Utd v Oxley Utd Both last start winners with identical scorelines (2-1). Virginia maintained their unbeaten status with a win over Western Spirit while Oxley came back from the Jinker Track with the three points to pull them away slightly from the relegation scrap. Virginia to remain unbeaten but I have a feeling it might be closer than expected.

CAPITAL LEAGUE 3 Newmarket v Westside Both teams came off second best in matches against the top two (in spite of my vote of confidence in each of them!). Both need a win in this one to avoid falling too far off the pace from the front-runners. It’s pretty even when comparing the goals for/against columns, so not much help there in deciding on a tip. Newmarket have improved since the start of the season, so I’ll go for them to get up.

CAPITAL LEAGUE 4 Samford Rangers v Bethania Rams Samford had last week off with a Bye while Bethania lost their unbeaten status, surprisingly going down to Springfield Utd (maybe not surprising to Springfield). Both sides were involved in midweek Pig 'N' Whistle Canale Cup action though which ended in defeat for both teams, although Samford were up against Lions FC. A long trip for the Rams and, at home, one would think that Rangers would get up. But the Rams will be stung by that defeat and I expect them to make a game of it although they'll be without Jake Cook who was sent off late on in their cup game against Park Ridge. I will stick with Rangers to win, maybe just by one.
