Pig'N'Whistle Canale Cup RD1 Preview

Round 1 of the Pig ’N’ Whistle Canale Cup concludes after the Easter weekend with five ties to ahead to complete the round. We did see one shock from one of last week's games with North Brisbane’s 2-1 success over Moggill, although the visitors fielded an understrength side for the tie. Can their be anymore 'cupsets'???

Moorondu (CL4) v Kangaroo Point Rovers (CL4) 7.00pm - Tues 11th April at William Taylor Sports Field. An all Capital League 4 affair and one that is hard to judge. Mooroondu were perhaps spared being on the end of a hefty defeat when the power failed on Friday night at home to Samford Rangers just before the hour mark with Samford 6-0 up. Rovers have only played the one game so far but it was a respectable 2-1 loss also to Samford. Based on those statistics you’d have to fancy Rovers to progress from this one… so long as the Roos have since paid their electricity bill. Western Spirit (CL2) v Logan Village (CL4) 7.30pm - Tues 11th April at Kippen Park. Spirit were comprehensively beaten by fellow Capital League 2 side Virginia United in the Westfield FFA Cup in the opening round, going down 13-0. That said Spirit fielded a very different side that day to where they are now as their league form sees them challenging the top four. But a game as recently as Sunday afternoon could see them rest some players for this tie against underdogs Logan Village. Village are again in a rebuilding phase and despite being competitive in recent games, they’ve been falling away towards the final quarter of games which has cost them. Maybe if Spirit field the same side from that previous cup encounter with Virginia, the Capital League 4 outfit might be in with a chance. Newmarket (CL3) v Oxley United (CL2) 7.30pm - Tues 11th April at McCook Park. This tie poses some questions with Capital League 3 side Newmarket beginning to gel after they were perhaps unfortunate to not grab all three points against Caboolture at the weekend, whilst Oxley Utd have struggled in the division above with their only two wins of the season coming against bottom side Park Ridge and Pine Rivers who seem to be on a swift downward trajectory. With this tie being played at McCook, it ought to make it a close encounter with extra time a possibility. Slacks Creek (CL3) v The Lakes (CL4) 7.30pm - Thur 13th April at Usher Park. The Tigers will be confident of progressing to the next round when The Lakes visit Usher Park on Thursday night. Creek currently sit in fourth spot on the Capital League 3 ladder whilst Lakes prop up the Capital League 4 ladder with no points from two games. It could prove to be a long night for the northside club if Creek get on a roll early. Logan Metro FC (CL4) v Caboolture Sports (CL3) 8.00pm - Tues 18th April at Compton Park. The final game of the round gets played after Easter and has already been switched from previously being hosted at Meakin Park. But due to the recent flooding, Metro have been forced to take it back to their home ground of Compton Park. The kick off time has also been pushed back to allow Caboolture to make the long trip south. Caboolture fell at the first hurdle in RD2 of the Westfield FFA Cup to Centenary Stormers and they’ll be hoping for a decent cup run here. Both teams will be familiar with each other from last season of which Caboolture enjoyed the better of things with two convincing successes over Metro. This tie shouldn’t be any different although the scoreline shouldn’t be as big as last season.
