Mitchelton 4 ( MacFarlane 28', 67'; Walker 45+1'; Wilson 81’) The Gap 0 HT: 2-0 Played at Teralba.Park - Field 3
In their second home game in as many weeks, Mitchelton won comfortably again in a round disrupted by wet weather which also forced this game to be moved from the main pitch to Field 3 at Teralba Park. Picking up where they left off last outing, Mitchelton had an early chance go begging. A threaded ball from Katie McDonald in the opening minute gave Darcie Wilson the space to force Gap stopper Jessica Anderson into a parry, but The Gap defence could only clear for a corner. The ensuing set-piece saw a bit of pinball in the penalty area but Rebecca Kirkup cleared to save her side from making the worst possible start. The opening 10 minutes was all Mustangs, as the girls in Yellow continued to maintain possession and test Anderson. Some excellent work from Wilson on the right side got Alexandria Walker the space required to turn and play a square ball for Jamie MacFarlane, but she hammered the ball into the crossbar, to let the Gap off the hook again. Lauren Askin had an opportunity to put The Gap ahead against the run of the play, but a commanding Emma Taylor in the home goal, came out to claim possession. MacFarlane and Wilson switched wings and not long after Wilson cut in on her favoured right foot to bring out another save from Anderson. It took them almost half an hour but Mitchelton finally found the back of the net in the 28th minute when Walker struck the woodwork, but the rebound landed at the feet of MacFarlane to tap the ball in and put her side rightfully ahead. The Gators had their best chance of the half in the closing 5 minutes when Askin found herself onside and in a dangerous position, but she could only fire across the face of goal. Wilson switched back onto the right flank late in the first half and continued to get at the Gap defence. She almost created the second goal of the half when she found Walker with space to turn again, but she could only find Anderson’s clutches. She made no mistake moments later though, when she curled a ball into the right corner, minutes before the end of the first half to send Mitchelton into the interval 2-0 up. Early in the second period and Anderson was already involved in the action as she pulled off an excellent one handed save to deny Gabrielle Dickinson from what would have been a great long range goal.
Only moments later and MacFarlane had her turn to see Anderson's acrobatics, when she cut in on the left and had a go on her right, but again the glove came up to keep Mitchelton out. Some short sharp football from Wilson and Walker drew out the Gator defence and Wilson broke through to be one on one, but she hit the woodwork after being quickly met by Anderson off her line. MacFarlane used her pace to run straight past her opposite number to be in-front of goal where she made no mistake in putting her team 3-0 ahead shortly after the hour mark. The second term ticked on and the Gap started to have a lot more of the ball, but as they started moving higher up the park, they were caught offside far too often to mount an attack on Taylor’s goal. Mitchie finished the game off in the 80th minute when Wilson finally found the back of the net after using her strength to maintain possession in the penalty area. Another resounding result for Mitchelton, adding to their Goals For tally with another strong attacking performance, but more importantly another 3 points to assert themselves at the top of the table.
