Errors Cost Jimboomba Dearly
Jimboomba United 1 (Roebig 51’) Tarragindi Tigers 4 (Smith 11’ 73’, Molloy 68’, Farr 80’) HT: 0-1 Played at Kurrajong Park
On a balmy evening at Kurrajong Park, a game of missed opportunities by both sides culminated with Tarragindi Tigers taking the points back home with them. The Tigers made the most of their second half chances to finish up 4-1 winners. Jimboomba had the first great chance on five minutes when a ball crossed from the left found Elijah Allan at the back post. With the goal at his mercy, he headed high and wide. On eleven minutes, the Tigers made the most of their first chance as a defensive error was pounced on by Cameron Smith and, with a clear run at goal, he placed the ball to Cody Attard’s right and into the net. Two minutes later, Jimboomba had a chance to square things up when a poor pass from Tigers’ keeper Rob Weaver gave Joel Wienk a clear shot at goal, albeit from an angle, but he could only find the side netting. The match continued from end to end with a number of chances being made by each side without reward. United had the next best chance from a right-side corner which was met by Steven Birt but he didn’t get a solid enough contact and the ball glanced past the far post. Hamish Farr was unlucky for the Tigers as he had two opportunities in two minutes just after the half hour, the first just eluding his despairing lunge for the ball and, while making contact with the second, could not get enough on it to direct it into the goal. A minute later Jack Bevan was through and rounded keeper Attard but the ball came back off the post and was cleared by the hosts. Attard was then called on to make a number of saves, coming off his line three times to block balls played through the Jimboomba defence and five minutes into the second half, Attard was again out to block Smith who latched onto a through ball. On 51 minutes, Allan caught a Tigers defender dwelling on the ball and stole it from him before making inroads towards the Tarragindi area abd feeding the ball to Shawn Roebig who hit the ball high into the net for the leveller. On the hour mark, a long throw from Jimboomba’s right found its way to Allan about eight yards and, when seemingly certain to score, he was thwarted by Weaver who was down quickly to spread himself and block the shot. However, the Tigers regained the lead with just over 20 minutes remaining when a free kick from the right was met by a glancing header at the near post by Matthew Molloy. A further goal arrived five minutes later when a long clearance by Weaver was controlled by Lachlan Auger and he drew Attard out, rounded him and squared for Smith to side-foot home. Soon after, Jimboomba had another good chance to reply when, from a free kick, the ball fell to Allan who prodded the ball goal-wards but without enough power to beat the dive of Weaver. The final goal came ten minutes from the end when Farr latched onto a through ball and, despite being pressured by a Jimboomba defender, managed to shrug him off and slot the ball under the advancing Attard for a 4-1 score-line. Jimboomba then had the better of the final minutes pressing for a goal but not creating anything of substance. Lots of chances missed by both teams was probably having both coaches tearing their hair out in frustration. A welcome win for the Tigers after three games without one. A disappointing second loss at home for United.
Coaches Reactions:
Ian Brown (Jimboomba Utd) - “A few silly mistakes at the back was what killed us tonight. There was a lack of confidence with our passing and this is something we need to work on. We’ve got to take those chances when they occur. I thought our effort in the second half was much better although that is not reflected on the score sheet. That’s how cruel football can be.” Julian Chan (Tarragindi) - “It was a match that could have gone either way. They had good chances to go ahead in the second half and that probably would have been fair. They had ten minutes of really good pressure there. You know you are always going to get a hard game down here. I just think we took our chances and we scored three good goals in the second half. It could have been anyone’s game tonight.”
