The Weekly Wash-Up

It was back into the action at the weekend after the Easter break as we head into that important middle part of the season where destinies will begin to take shape. So what caught our eye from the weekend’s results? #1. Despite another comfortable victory for Mitchelton’s women in the Mt Franklin Women’s Premier League against Eastern Suburbs, we couldn’t help but notice they shipped three goals to the Tigers.

In a 6-3 win this wouldn’t normally cause a stir but considering they’d only previously conceded once in six hours of football, it could offer some hope to opposing teams that the Mustangs defence can be penetrated. #2. We’re going to stick with the Mt Franklin Women’s Premier League as we had to mention Virginia United’s first win of the season and in premier league competition, after a 3-1 success over Logan Lightning on Sunday evening. Goals were exchanged during a frenetic four minute spell before Natalie Finney settled United’s nerves with the sealer on 81 minutes.

That win should provide them with some confidence and perhaps an unlikely chance of making the top four come August if they can build upon it. #3. What would surely have come as a surprise to many was the result from Pine Rivers Utd and Centenary Stormers on Sunday. Although the final scoreline went in favour of Stormers, for a good period of time the Capital League 2 leaders were facing a potential shock loss with Rivers in front from a first half Nasir Khan goal. Jason Le however struck with a brace midway through the second half to spare Centenary’s blushes.

A 2-1 scoreline against a side that had been netting more than 4.5 goals per game up until this one is a far more respectable outcome for Rivers who had been leaking goals by the same amount leading into this game. Could they have finally turned a corner? #4. Capital League 1's Wolves FC are slowly but surely becoming the proverbial under-performers of the season, slumping to another defeat against North Pine who spent close to a half of the game with only ten men. It capped off a disappointing week that saw Mark Rasmussen depart the club and return to Holland Park Hawks.

Wolves now languishing in 10th spot on the ladder and well off the pace of what many predicted would see them as favourites for promotion to the Flight Centre Premier League. #5. An entertaining 3-3 draw between Eastern Suburbs and Lions FC on Saturday night finally saw an end to Lions recent losing streak. However, after a dramatic eight minute second half spell saw Easts take a 3-1 lead, Lions supporters would have been left scratching their heads thinking they were about to witness yet another defeat for the reigning premiers. But deservedly, Warren Moon’s side battled back, eventually levelling the contest through Tynan Diaz's 86th minute strike to rescue a point.

Lions still however sit in mid-table on 11 points with three other sides in what is without doubt the closest Flight Centre Premier League season for some time.
