Games Played at AJ Kelly Park

Football Brisbane's Men's and Women's Select sides each savoured victories over their Sunshine Coast Football opponents on Sunday afternoon to retain the uhlsport Challenge Cup that's played for each year between the two neighbouring zones, with the women romping to a 5-0 success whilst the men's side saw out their game 6-4 after a late comeback from Sunshine Coast.

The women's scoreline may have suggested a more comfortable outing but it was the visitors who started the more lively of the two teams. A goal mouth scramble saw Sunshine Coast with a handful of attempts in quick succession before Brisbane cleared their lines, but the best chance fell to Chrissy Wegner moments later, but she only direct her attempt straight at Gemma Layfield when through 1 on 1 with the Brisbane keeper. Brisbane made Coast pay soon after when they opened the scoring just before the quarter hour mark through a penalty, after Alisha Cooper was adjudged to have fouled Stephanie Laytham. Katie McDonald converting the spot kick. The hosts made it 2-0 midway through the half when Tiarne Petterwood's shot was parried by Coast keeper Amy Higgins, with Donna Smith tapping in the loose ball from close range. Layfield was called into action a short while later, diving superbly to her left to deny Lucy McEachen's goal bound effort. The second half was a more laboured affair as Brisbane's superiority showed. Goals to Gabrielle Brodie 53 mins, Donna Smith with her second on 58 mins and Petterwood combining again with Smith on 71 mins after Smith's initial effort was saved, with Petterwood claiming the scraps, had the home side move out to commanding lead. The visitors offered little in the second term as both sides were noticeably fatigued from the afternoon heat as the game limped to conclusion.

Football Brisbane's men got off to the perfect start in their clash with Dean Briggs netting in just the second minute as the crowd were still getting settled in their seats. Brisbane extended their lead ten minutes later when Marek Madle played the ball through for Greg Cheshire who calmly rounded Coast keeper Tim Cornthwaite before passing into the empty net. Brisbane had the ball in the back of the net a minute later only for Referee Rebecca Durcau to scrub it off for an offside in the build up. Sunshine Coast then notched their first goal against their Brisbane opponents in three attempts when Luke Alderson struck midway through the half with a sublime looping shot over Brandon Cuminao in the Brisbane goal. Immediate thoughts of a Coast comeback were dashed just minutes later when the Coast defence were caught napping. Ben Njie causing havoc as he again turned provider for Marco Jankovic who's low shot found the back of the net via the base of the post. Marek Madle had an effort cleared off the line Sunshine Coast's Korey Nix after beating Cornthwaite at his near post but the hosts further extended their lead a little after the half hour when Cornthwaite looked to clear a poor back pass, cannoning the ball into Madle with the rebound falling kindly for Njie who made no mistake from six yards out. Michael Scarff was unfortunate to not reduce the deficit for Coast soon after the break when his effort struck the woodwork. Instead, Brisbane would make it 5-1 two minutes later with Cheshire netting his brace when beating the offside trap and cooly slotting the ball beyond substitute keeper Dale Hill. Sunshine Coast pulled one back midway through the second term with Matt Needham, drilling a low shot across substitute keeper Linus Schibler. Brisbane restored their four goal advantage six minutes later with the goal of the game. Sekou Jomanday embarking on a fine solo run, beating three opponents before cutting the ball across for an unmarked Njie who side footed the ball home. Brisbane then seemed to take their foot of the gas as the visitors embarked upon an impossible comeback. With less than ten minutes remaining, Matt Thompson's long range grass cutter had Schibler wrong footed to make it 6-3. Schibler made amends with a superb save moments later to deny Ryan Clulow but the Brisbane stopper was beaten a minute later when Alderson earned his second on the night to make it 6-4. Time however ran out for Sunshine Coast as proceedings drew to close soon after. Brisbane claiming the trophy with an 11-4 aggregate scoreline over the two games.
